You might even be operating under an illusion of protection that could harm your skin. AAA has excellent tips to help you better protect yourself and your children from UV.</p>
<p><strong>Visit a dermatologist</strong>. More than 2 million Americans are diagnosed with nonmelanoma skin cancer each year, 90% of that is due to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and cause 8,700 deaths last year. The good news is that with early detection, most skin cancer can be treated effectively.<span id="more-2322"></span><br />
</p>
<p><strong>Use enough sunscreen</strong>. Use at least a shot glass full &#8211; minimum 2 ounces for full body protection. If your sunscreen contains 8 ounces, you need to use 1/4 for each stint in the sun.</p>
<p><strong>Apply early or often</strong>. According the American Cancer Society, slather up 30 minutes before you go out in the sun and reapply at least every 2 hours &#8211; more often if you swim.</p>
<p><strong>Select SPF 30 or higher</strong>. SPF(sun protection fact) is a measure of sunburn protection. SPF 15 lets you stay out for 150 minutes, blocking 93% of UVB rays. SPF 30 blocks 97%. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF or higher.</p>
<p><strong>Choose UVB and UVA protection</strong>. EWG (Environmental Working Group) recently concluded that sunscreens available in the US with Mineral sun blockers are superior to those that rely on chemicals. The highest rating for sunscreens that contain zinc and titanium, which are 2 of only 4 UVA blockers available in the U.S. If you don&#8217;t care for the feel of mineral sunscreen, look for one with avobenzone (also called Parsol 1789) or Mexoryl SX.</p>
<p><strong>Do not rely on cotton t-shirt</strong>. The average cotton t-shirt gives you an SPF 5-8, and number drops when its wet. You may get sun-protective garments between 40-50 with fit and ventilation feature. Solumbra, ExOfficio, and Tilley Endurables are good brands.</p>
<p><strong>Be aware incidental exposure</strong>. Such as walking to work, walking your dog, cause sun cumulative sun damage. When you are on vacation, it is easy have cumulative sun damage.</p>
<p><strong>Avoid suntan</strong>. Tanning is an indication of injured skin. And like sunburn damage, suntan damage is cumulative, it quickens the aging of skin and increases the risk of skin cancer.</p>
<p><strong>Protect your lips, eyes and scalp.</strong> Waring lip balm that contains SPF 15, or simply waring hat with at least a 3 inch brim, that protects your eyes, which are subject to cataracts, macular degeneration (leading cause of vision loss in people over 65), lesions, and other disease caused by cumulative UV exposure. Sunglasses with 100% UV blockage is needed, especially when you are outdoor often, you might consider sport glasses. Your children shall get sunglasses as well.</p>
